Volunteer Signup - National Muslim Mask Making Campaign

Assalam Alaikum

Thank you for volunteering to make face masks or face shields. Please fill this form out completely. A project coordinator will be in touch soon.

We are in need of cutters and sewers for face masks, as well as volunteers to make face shields. Face masks can be of two types: simple of with a filter pocket. Pick the one that you want to make. Let us know if you need materials in comments.

Face Mask Instructions:
Please make masks with 100% cotton and elastic ties. If you don’t have elastic, use ribbon instead.

1. Current fabric requirements:
100% cotton
Tightly woven
Pre-shrunk
New or freshly washed

2. Select a pattern below:
Simple Mask: FreeSewing.org face-mask pattern with instructions (PDF and video) Sizes included
https://freesewing.org/blog/facemask-frenzy/
No filter pocket
Tip: use more than the recommended 4 feet of ribbon for the ties

DIY Cloth Face in Mask -  Includes nose wire to secure to face better https://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Cloth-Face-Mask/

Filtered Mask
Erin’s mask (instructions and link to pattern) https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_mdW3mU4XCbSgWPevDAbZSN5dTDmKI3uk9j8c3pwpXU/edit
Includes filter pocket - leave filter pockets empty so masks can be sterilized by the facility
Uses elastic but can use ties instead
Takes about 30 minutes
Tip: In the instructions, solid line vs dotted indicates which way it’s being folded

Start sewing!

3. Filter (optional)
Note: Include filters if you have them, but do not insert into masks to allow masks to be sterilized by the facility
Recommended filters:
The Olsen Mask uses 0.3 micron filters, which can be purchased online
Vacuum cleaner bags, furnace filters, and tea towels are good alternatives

4. Ties and elastic
For ties, I cut two 1 1/2" strips the width of the fabric, cut each of them in half (so you have 4 strips 1 1/2" x about 20") then turn under and press about 1/3 of the strip along each long side, then fold in half lengthwise, so the two folded-under edges meet, and then top stitch along that edge. Stick the non-selvage inside the mask's seam when stitching it in place, and then the neater selvage end is the finished end. It's kinda' down-and-dirty tie-making, not heirloom quality, but these are meant for use, not for show.

Ties instead of elastic make the masks work for a larger range of users's sizes, but take longer to make, although perhaps using washable ribbon or maybe seam binding? would be quicker and just as functional

Depending on your county, your zone coordinator will be in touch with you.

5. Upon Masks Completion:

Once finished with a batch of 20, let your zone coordinator know to coordinate pick up or delivery.
